Contributors to Conceptions Southwest must be undergraduate or graduate students, alumni, faculty, staff, or continuing education students at the University of New Mexico. 

We accept short fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, theatrical writing, photography, visual art, music and composition, short film, and other media (creative works limited only by your imagination).

Submissions are limited to five works per person in any combination of categories. If you exceed this amount, Conceptions Southwest reserves the right to invalidate any and all of your submissions.

Submissions may be in any language; if they are in a language other than English, an English translation must be provided with the submission.

Please acknowledge that in submitting your work to Conceptions Southwest, you agree to allow staff to edit your work for publication purposes. This includes editing for grammar errors and to fit the Conceptions Southwest specific style guide as well as general Chicago Manual of Style rules. We will notify you of any changes we make and, after acknowledgement and approval, the edited piece will be used for publication.

The version of the piece(s) submitted will be what is considered and no changes besides those relating to grammar will be accepted after the deadline.

Deadline for submissions for our 2017-2018 edition is November 17, 2017 at midnight.

Short memoirs, personal essays, literary journalism, or excerpts from longer works.
  • Works must not exceed 5,000 words each.
  • Foreign language submissions in a language other than English must be accompanied by a translation, either as a separate document or following the piece. Word count and page length must be counted with both the translation and the foreign language piece. 
  • Submission must be in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format. We will not accept .pdf submissions or scanned, handwritten documents. Save the document as its full submission title.
  • Text submissions must be double-spaced with page numbers and title. Please do not use any unusual fonts (Times New Roman preferred). 
  • Please acknowledge that in submitting your work to Conceptions Southwest, you agree to allow staff to edit your work for publication purposes. Original compositions, with or without lyrics. 
  • Sheet Music must accompany all Music submissions. 
  • An excerpt of the sheet music will be published in the magazine; the full work will be published online.
  • Please acknowledge that in submitting your music composition, Conceptions Southwest reserves the right to publish and post the piece online for viewing and listening purposes. Rights and credit will belong to the contributor and will be noted as such in the piece.

Short Films in any style.
  • Short Film must not exceed ten minutes in length. 
  • Please acknowledge that in submitting your short film, Conceptions Southwest reserves the right to publish and post the Short Film online for viewing purposes. Rights and credit will belong to the contributor and will be noted as such in the film.
  • Please acknowledge that in submitting your work to Conceptions Southwest, you agree to allow staff to edit your work for publication purposes. This includes choosing stills to be showcased in the magazine as well as editing any description or artist statement for the short film to adhere to basic grammar rules, Chicago Manual of Style guidelines, and the Conceptions Southwest style guide.

Short works for stage or screen, including monologues, short plays, or short screenplays.
  • Works must not exceed 5,000 words each. 
  • Script should not exceed 5 pages, however, if it goes over this amount, we will publish an excerpt and will publish the full script online.
  • Foreign Language submissions in a language other than English must be accompanied by a translation, either as a separate document or following the piece. Word count and page length must be counted with both the translation and the foreign language piece.

  • Submissions can be in color or black and white, but much of the magazine will be printed in black and white. Please keep this in mind when submitting.
